REMEMBERING THE NUMBER
OF DAYS IN MONTHS©
The
Aristean calendar has only either 30 or 31 days in a month. Each quarter has 31 days in the first month
and 30 days in the second and third months.
The exception is the last quarter where December has 31 days. Thus, 31-30-30-31-30-30-31-30-30-31-30-31.
The
mnemonics devised to easily remember the number of days of each of the 12
months during common or ordinary year is with the use of the fingers of our
hands. This is done by spreading out all
the ten fingers of our two hands with the palms facing down. Then the ring and middle fingers are bent
inward and held by the thumbs. This
results with the little fingers and the index fingers sticking out. These represent the months with 31 days while
those fingers not sticking out are for the months with 30 days.
Thus,
counting from left to right, the months with 31 days are as follows:
Left little finger - month
1, January
Left index finger - month 4, April
Right index finger - month
7, July
Right little finger - month
10, October
The months
with 30 days are as follows:
Left ring finger - month 2, February
Left middle finger - month 3, March
Left thumb - month 5, May
Right thumb - month 6, June
Right middle finger – month 8,
August
Right ring finger - month 9 September,
Since we
only have ten fingers whereas there are 12 months in a year, we use our right
hand to continue counting. The eleventh
month, November, which has 30 days, is represented by the right thumb, and the
twelfth month, December, by the right index finger which is sticking out,
hence, has 31 days.
Counting
from right to left produces the same result, namely:
Right little finger - month 1, January
Right index finger - month 4, April
Left index finger - month 7, July
Left index finger - month 10, October
The months
with 30 days are as follows:
Right ring finger - month 2, February
Right middle finger – month 3, March
Right thumb - month 5, May
Left thumb - month 6, June
Left middle finger - month 8, August
Left ring finger - month 9, September
The
eleventh month, November, 30 days, is represented by the left thumb, and the
twelfth month, December, 31 days, by the left index finger.
NURSERY RHYME
The nursery
rhyme that school children use to remember the number of days in months of the
present Gregorian calendar runs like this:
“Thirty
days hath September,
April, June and November;
February
has twenty-eight alone,
All the
rest have thirty-one;
Excepting
leap year: that’s the time
When
February’s days are twenty-nine.”
Proposed
nursery rhyme for the Aristean calendar is as follows:
“Thirty-one
days hath December,
January, April, July, and October;
All the rest
have thirty;
Excepting
leap year; that’s the time
When June’s
days are thirty-one.”
