True meaning of "two men and two women"
in Matthew 24:40-41

On September 7, 1999, I raised the question of who the two men and two women are mentioned in Matthew 24:40-41 and Luke 17:35-36. This is Matthew 24:40-41: "At that time two men will be working in a field: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. Two women will be at a mill grinding meal: one will be taken, the other will be left behind." This is part of what Jesus said as He related the coming of the Son of Man which, no one knows of the day and hour except the Father. They seem to be trivial but they are included in the Bible.

There were several responses to my posting in various newsgroups. My sincerest thanks to those who responded. It is good to know what people think about this passage. The variety of answers only shows that the Bible can be interpreted differently. But which of them is correct? Before I say which is correct and which is not, let me present most of the responses:

"They represent the righteous and the wicked. The righteous who shall go to Paradise and the wicked who shall go to Hell."

"The two people are merely a small example of all the people on earth when Christ comes."

"The one(s) taken first, worship the antichrist (Satan). The second one(s) are the ones who wait for the true Christ to appear, therefore they will not be taken first."

"Seems to mean that 50% of the country folks will be taken away and all the city and town folks left behind."

"It alludes to the Old Testament teaching, a remnant shall be safe. Also, in Revelation, a third part of the people will be spared."

"See "

"It means that two people who are apparently doing the same thing (preaching the gospel, or ministering to the missionaries) will fare differently when the hour of test arrives, one will show the faith, the other will not, and is therefore abandoned as some thing physical, not spiritual."

"This is a prediction of what will happen prior to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The young man will be taken to serve in the rebel army or be taken captive by the Romans as a slave, and the young woman will be taken as booty by the invading Romans. Thus, one man (the young one) is taken, and the other (the old one) is left. One woman (the young one) is taken, and the other (the old one) is left."

"The two people are merely a small example of all the people on earth when Christ comes. And the one taken is the one fooled by the flood of Satan's lies. The one left in the field (the world) is the one working doing God's work."

"I think that Jesus was just showing the suddenness of the event. That is, one person will be left standing, and one will be taken. I don't think they were particular individuals, but were intended to be a part of the story he was telling."

"Both of these people in both groups are so-called Christians waiting for Christ to take them to the wedding which is at the beginning of Christ's reign on earth for 1000 years. That means HALF of us so-called Christians are not going to be in God's kingdom."

"I believe this passage means that we have no basis for or capability of judging our fellow man. God decides who will be chosen. Our responsibility is to do the best we can in accordance with our understanding of God's message."

"These that are taken are the "elect" of Matthew 24:31."

Not any of these, however, matches, or even near to, what the Holy Spirit revealed as to the true meaning of this Bible passage. Nobody. Honestly, I did not know it either until several others and I heard the simple explanation of the Holy Spirit. This is what He said. Regarding the two men, the man who was taken up was Jesus Christ and the man left behind is the Holy Spirit. Regarding the two women, the woman who was taken up was the Blessed Virgin Mary and the woman who was left behind is living with us here on Earth at the present time. I will introduce this woman in a little while.

The man who was taken up is Jesus Christ when He ascended to Heaven. His ascension was seen by His apostles as related in Acts 1:9, to wit, "After saying this, He was taken up to Heaven as they (the apostles) watched Him, and a cloud hid Him from their sight."

The ascension of Jesus to Heaven is the second joyful mystery of the rosary recited in the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Spirit said to us that this mystery "shows or demonstrates or manifests that Jesus is true Lord, although He became a human being on Earth. He was with us and lived with mankind so that He could let people feel His endless mercy and love."

The man who was left behind is the Holy Spirit. He is the one promised by Jesus that He would send after Jesus is gone. The works of the Holy Spirit that Jesus would send are in John chapters 14, 15, and 16. The following are those passages taken from the Good News Bible:

John 14:26

"The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you."

John 14:16-17

"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, who will stay with you for ever. He is the Spirit who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive Him, because it cannot see Him or know Him. But you know Him, because He remains with you and is in you."

John 15:26

"The Helper will come--the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father. I will send Him to you from the Father, and He will speak about Me."

John 16:12-15

"I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, He will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own authority, but He will speak of what He hears, and will tell you of things to come. He will give Me glory, because He will take what I say and tell it to you. All that My Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give Him and tell it to you."

This is what Jesus said in John 16:7-11 why He had to go: "But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God's judgement. They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in Me; they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more; and they are wrong about judgement, because the ruler of this world has already been judged."

The Holy Spirit came soon after Jesus ascended to Heaven. Acts 2:1-4 relates the first experience of the believers of Jesus with the Holy Spirit, to wit, "When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak."

The descend of God the Holy Spirit on His apostles is the third joyful mystery of the rosary recited in the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Spirit said to us that this mystery happened in order "to let the apostles feel the heat and flame of the fire of the Holy Spirit, and in their hearts, the love to God will kindle. And in that way, the apostles would have joy and enthusiasm, that they would perform their duties cleanly." The Holy Spirit taught us to pray the following after we have learned the significance of this mystery. Here is that prayer:

"Lord, Lord, Lord, we are here and we offer to you our hearts, our mouths, our eyes, our whole being and soul so that peace will be achieved in this whole world.

"Allow us to feel the heat and flame of the Holy Spirit, that you will kindle in our hearts the glory of love for our fellowmen up to the glory of
Your Heavens.  Amen."

I, for one, am fortunate that I have found the Holy Spirit. Maybe, it was really destined that I would find Him. Please see the circumstances in my life in my WebPages under the topic "Signs Behind God's Calendar". I still have to include coincidences in my life related to my discovery of the number of Jesus.

According to the Holy Spirit, the woman who was taken up is the Blessed Virgin Mary. People may not believe this but the Holy Spirit told us that the spirit that was in the human being Mary is from Heaven. Actually, that spirit is the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist and cousin of Mary, said in a loud voice while filled with the Holy Spirit when Mary visited her, "You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear." (Luke 1:41-42) The importance of Mary is highlighted while Jesus was nailed on the cross. This is in John 19:25-27, to wit, "Standing close to Jesus' cross were His mother, His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved standing there; so He said to His mother, 'He is your son.' "Then He said to the disciple, 'She is your mother.' From that time the disciple took her to live in his home." Mary became the mother of the apostles as instructed by Jesus. And she should be mother to all of us Christians as well.

The ascension to Heaven by the Blessed Virgin Mary by her son Jesus Christ is the fourth joyful mystery of the rosary recited in the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Spirit said to us the significance of this mystery. He said that all who cleanse themselves and who make themselves holy and who obey the commandments of Jesus will have the glory of His Heavens. He further said to those who were present and hearing Him to meditate, reflect, and ponder upon these things being heard. They are mysteries that will happen to us when we die if we are worthy in following the commandments of our Lord. His immaculate Mother was taken up to Heaven to make her the adviser of mankind and become the way to peace, peace that we should feel and experience here on Earth. Our sacrifices and the bearing of sufferings like His mother will have or acquire relief and peace in Heaven.

According to the Holy Spirit, the woman left behind here on Earth after the ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Heaven was in the form of a human being like you and me. Jesus took from the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary the spirit He placed in a female human being. That human being was born as Reneliniyindi to a king and queen in Egypt about 2000 years ago. The spirit in Reneliniyindi had since been reincarnated in various persons in various places. The Holy Spirit said that one of her reincarnations was in Joan of Arc. At present, that spirit is in a woman Maria Liwayway Alvaran who is in the Philippines. I believe that Holy Spirit has led me to find her.

What I am relating to you about this woman may not be entirely biblical because it happened after the New Testament was written. But this is what the Holy Spirit revealed. Is His explanation about these two men and two women plausible? The big question mark to you maybe regarding the woman left behind. I do not know much about the Old Testament. If you could find something in the Old and New Testaments that may allude to this revelation, I would be very glad to hear about it.

God bless us always.
