SPEAKING IN TONGUES
2:1-15 tells us how the Holy Spirit filled the believers of Jesus in
Galilee to speak in tongues which they did not know. The visitors were all
amazed and marveled at the strange phenomenon. Some mocked them of being
drunk of new wine.
1 Corinthians chapter 14 tells us to "covet to prophesy and forbid not to
speak with tongues" (1 Cor. 14:39, KJV) for what is the use of speaking in
unknown tongues if no one understands the message.
Some members of some congregations have experiences of speaking in tongues. The church claims that it is the Holy Spirit who speaks through these people. But is it really the Holy Spirit who speaks through them? Have you ever raised this question before? If it is the Holy Spirit who have spoken in tongues through these people, what was the message? Did anyone, including the pastors, ministers, priests, etc., understand what was said? Was there any interpreter? Was it tape recorded? In what language was it said?
Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit. In John chapters 14, 15
and 16, Jesus told the apostles of what the Holy Spirit would do: a) teach
all things (John 14:26); b) bring all things to the remembrance all that
Jesus said to the apostles (John 14:26); c) testify about Jesus (John
15:27); d) reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment
(John 16:8-11); e) guide into all truths (John 16:13); show of things to
come, meaning to prophesy (John 16:13); glorify Jesus (John 16:14).
For the enlightenment of all peoples, the Holy Spirit should have done any
or all of these acts described by Jesus, if He were to use someone to speak
in tongues. Did anyone of those who spoke and who heard understand the
message? If it was the Holy Spirit and no one understood, what benefit will
people get? What for? Do you think the Holy Spirit will use some to speak
in tongues if no one will know His message? Please scrutinize chapter 14 of
1 Corinthians. Please test the spirit who speaks through these people (1
